Town Meeting Traditions and Procedures

Town Meeting is the purest form of democracy. It is the legislative branch of Ashfield’s government, enacting bylaws, creating policies, and approving town expenditures. Instead of electing representatives to speak and act on their behalf, at Town Meeting all registered voters may speak and vote directly on matters that affect their lives and their community. This handbook is offered to assist voters and encourage them to participate in Town Meeting. It is designed to answer questions that often arise. It is based on the 2016-2017 Concord, MA Town Meeting Traditions and Procedures, adapted by Ashfield Town Moderator Buz Eisenberg to help Ashfield Town Meeting participants understand how our Town Meetings work. Suggestions, including additional topics for future revisions, are welcome. The Moderator may be reached by email at or by telephone at 413.628.3325.
